Coffee is a deceptively simple drink. At its core, brewing is nothing more than passing hot water through ground coffee - yet the way that water meets coffee shapes everything about the final cup: its body, clarity, sweetness, acidity, and intensity. Every brewing method is, in essence, a different answer to three questions: how finely is the coffee ground, how long does the water stay in contact with it, and how much pressure is involved?
This guide walks through the most influential brewing methods in use today, what makes each one distinctive, and what kind of cup you can expect from it.
Espresso
Espresso is the foundation of modern café culture and the most technically demanding method on this list. A machine forces hot water (typically around 90–96 °C) through a compacted bed of very finely ground coffee at roughly nine bars of pressure. The entire extraction takes only 25 to 30 seconds and yields a small, concentrated shot of 25–40 ml.
That pressure is what sets espresso apart. It emulsifies the coffee's oils and dissolves carbon dioxide into the liquid, producing crema - the golden, aromatic foam that sits atop a well-pulled shot. The result is intense, syrupy, and layered, with a body no other method can match.
Espresso rewards precision. Small changes in grind size, dose, or tamping pressure produce dramatic differences in the cup, which is why baristas "dial in" their grinders daily. It also serves as the base for the majority of milk drinks: cappuccinos, lattes, flat whites, and cortados all begin with a shot of espresso.
Best for: intensity, milk-based drinks, and those who enjoy the ritual of dialing in a shot.

Pour-Over: The Hario V60
The Hario V60, introduced by the Japanese company Hario in 2004, has become the emblem of the modern pour-over movement. Its name comes from its 60-degree cone angle, and its design - a single large opening at the bottom and spiral ribs along the interior walls - gives the brewer unusual control over flow rate.
Brewing with a V60 is an active process. Water is poured by hand, usually with a gooseneck kettle, in slow, deliberate stages. A typical brew begins with a "bloom": a small amount of water saturates the grounds and lets trapped gases escape for 30–45 seconds before the main pours begin. Grind size, pour speed, and water temperature all remain in the brewer's hands from start to finish.
The payoff is clarity. Because a paper filter removes nearly all oils and fine sediment, the V60 produces a clean, bright, tea-like cup that showcases delicate flavors - floral notes in an Ethiopian coffee, or crisp fruit acidity in a Kenyan. It is the method of choice for tasting what a particular origin or roast truly has to offer.

AeroPress
Invented in 2005 by Alan Adler - the engineer behind the Aerobie flying disc - the AeroPress is a compact plastic brewer that combines immersion and pressure. Coffee and water steep together in a chamber, and the brewer then presses a plunger to force the coffee through a small paper filter.
The AeroPress's defining trait is versatility. It tolerates a wide range of grind sizes, water temperatures, and ratios, and it can produce anything from a clean, filter-style cup to a short, concentrated brew resembling espresso. The "inverted" technique - flipping the device upside down to extend steeping time - is only one of countless recipes; the annual World AeroPress Championship exists largely because the device invites endless experimentation.
It is also nearly indestructible and cleans up in seconds, which has made it a favorite among travelers, campers, and office workers. For its modest price, few brewers offer so much range.
Best for: travel, experimentation, and single cups brewed quickly.

French Press
The French press (also called a cafetière or plunger pot) is the classic full-immersion method. Coarsely ground coffee steeps directly in hot water for around four minutes, after which a metal mesh plunger separates the grounds from the liquid.
Because the metal filter allows oils and fine particles to pass through, French press coffee is heavy-bodied, rich, and textured - the polar opposite of a V60 brew. It sacrifices clarity for weight and mouthfeel, which many drinkers find deeply satisfying, particularly with darker roasts or coffees with chocolate and nut character.
It is also one of the most forgiving methods: no pouring technique is required, and a kitchen scale and timer are all the equipment you need beyond the press itself.
Best for: rich, full-bodied cups and low-effort brewing for several people at once.

Chemex
The Chemex, designed in 1941 by chemist Peter Schlumbohm, is a pour-over brewer with a distinctive hourglass-shaped glass vessel - elegant enough to be included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Functionally, it works like other pour-overs, but its proprietary filters are significantly thicker than standard papers.
Those thick filters slow the flow of water and remove even more oils and sediment than a V60, producing what is arguably the cleanest, crispest cup in coffee. The Chemex also brews larger volumes comfortably, making it well suited to serving several people at once.
Best for: exceptionally clean coffee and brewing for a table rather than a single cup.

Moka Pot
The moka pot, patented by Alfonso Bialetti in 1933, is an icon of Italian domestic life. This stovetop brewer uses steam pressure from a lower water chamber to push hot water up through a bed of coffee and into an upper collection chamber.
Though often described as "stovetop espresso," the moka pot generates only one to two bars of pressure - far short of a true espresso machine - so it produces no crema. What it does produce is a strong, bold, concentrated brew with a pleasantly bitter edge, ideal on its own in small cups or lengthened with hot milk into a caffè latte at home.
Best for: strong, affordable, espresso-adjacent coffee without a machine.

Cold Brew
Cold brew abandons heat entirely. Coarsely ground coffee steeps in cold or room-temperature water for 12 to 24 hours, after which the concentrate is filtered and usually diluted with water or milk before drinking.
The long, cold extraction pulls out sugars and heavier compounds while leaving behind much of the acidity and bitterness that hot water extracts. The result is smooth, sweet, and mellow, with a chocolatey character that holds up beautifully over ice. Because the concentrate keeps for a week or more in the refrigerator, cold brew is also one of the most convenient methods for anyone who wants coffee ready on demand.
Best for: iced coffee, low-acidity cups, and batch preparation.

Turkish Coffee (Cezve/Ibrik)
One of the oldest brewing traditions still in daily use, Turkish coffee is prepared in a small long-handled pot called a cezve (or ibrik). Coffee ground to a powder-fine consistency - finer even than espresso - is combined with water and often sugar, then brought gently to the edge of a boil, sometimes several times, until a delicate foam forms.
The coffee is served unfiltered; the grounds settle at the bottom of the cup, and the drink is sipped slowly from the top. The result is thick, intense, and aromatic, often perfumed with cardamom. The preparation and serving of Turkish coffee is so culturally significant that UNESCO added it to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013.
Best for: a rich, ceremonial cup and a connection to coffee's deep history.

Choosing a Method
There is no single best way to brew coffee - only the best way for a given moment, coffee, and drinker. A few guiding principles help narrow the field. If you value clarity and want to taste the distinct character of a single-origin coffee, reach for a paper-filtered pour-over like the V60 or Chemex. If you prefer weight and richness, immersion methods such as the French press deliver it effortlessly. If intensity is the goal, espresso and the moka pot concentrate coffee into its most potent forms. And if convenience or portability matters most, the AeroPress and cold brew are hard to beat.
Whatever the method, the fundamentals remain the same: freshly roasted beans, a consistent grind matched to the brewer, clean water at the right temperature, and a reliable ratio of coffee to water (a good starting point for filter methods is 1:16 by weight - about 60 grams of coffee per liter of water).
